The Least Among You is film written and directed by Mark Young. It's a story of a young man who is falsely arrested and faces prison. He is offered an alternative. Attend a all white seminary on probation for two semesters. The story is based on the actually events of real life minister Richard Kelly portrayed by Cedric Sanders. So many layers to explore in this story. It should be a much better film. However the filmmakers missed opportunites to deepen the story and I was left disappointed by the telling.
One thing obvious in the movie is the faith of Richard's Mother. However other than a few short scenes in the beginning we don't see her again. We learn from brief phone conversations with Richard his younger brother disturbing news about their mother. Yet we don't see her again. A missed opportunity.

Two scenes in the movie depict brutal acts of violence. Based on that, I wouldn't recommend it for children of any age. Especially when one act of violence is against a child. All the violence against Richard was perpetrated by other African Americans. It was if the film maker was saying, his problem was really with his own people and environment, not the blatant racism at the school. That made me uncomfortable.

The film is however well acted with gifted people like Louis Gossett Jr., William DeVane and Lauren Holly. Ms. Holly's performance was incredible. I wanted to know more about her character and the pain she suffered. Yet once again a missed opportunity and more disappointment.

This book is about how Roger Wilson changed the way he ate and changed his life. Reducing his massive 425 pound body by losing 230 pounds and keeping it off for over 15 years.

The first thing you need to know about the book is that the author isn't making a dime from it. All the proceeds are donated towards organizations that spread the gospel. That should tell you something about Roger Troy Wilson. So now that we know that this book was written with the best intentions, to help us weary dieters learn how to lose weight and keep it off.

Like all big eaters and food lovers I wanted a quick easy fix. This isn't one but I became more encouraged as I continued reading. Mr. Wilson's plan is not dependant on exercise but he does advise it. Nor do you have to measure your food or count calories. You do have to make wise choices and he shows how to do that in an easy going friendly manner.

I love that the book includes letters and recipes from others who have adopted Mr. Wilson's way of eating. I think most will find his tips safe and effective. I also love that he thought of free style dieters who hate being told exactly what to eat. However he also included a 14 day meal guide for those who prefer more structure.

The book gives a list of foods to avoid but tell you how to deal with eating out, and fast food. There is a long list of items you might want to add to your pantry. I have made some changes to my way of eating. Thanks to Roger I am on my way to a healthier life style. What better recommendation can I give than that?
This book is a first hand account of 311 days of captivity.

First let me make it clear that I am glad Roy Hallums made it back home to his family and friends. I can’t imagine even after having read the book what it was like for him day after day. However I found the book itself lacking. It lacked emotions and was fairly robotic in nature when it came to Mr. Hallums trying to explain what he felt and endured.

There was sense that he was holding out on the reader. Maybe it was because the experience itself was so horrible that his mind will only allow him to share the surface emotions of his captivity. I wanted to be inspired by Mr. Hallums’ experience I was only saddened by his choice to live in an unsafe country. Bagdad is not exactly a tourist haunt. As americans we must consider our choices especially when they put our soldiers at risk.

There were some elements in the book I didn’t enjoy at all. There was more smoke than fire.

The Hallums family account gave me more understanding on exactly what a family has to endure in this situation. They opened their hearts for this book and I don’t take that lightly. I just wish Mr. Hallums would have let us in, but I think I understand why maybe he just couldn’t.

The Jack Daniel's Spirit of Tennessee cookbook is original and comes with its own style of southern cooking infused with charm and sometimes a naughty dose of Jack Daniel's whiskey. Lynne Tolley a direct descendant of Jack Daniels, and restaurateur who holds degree in home economics and nutrition, and writer Pat Michamore took the extra time to provide key elements of Tennessee history along with some tempting recipes. As you enter into the pages you can imagine the sights, sounds and smells of the region. I will note that if you must have photographs of the completed dish then this book might not be for you. However if you are a cook who loves dishes that have been handed down over the years, like homemade cookout relish this is a must have book. The best cookbooks give you foods from A to Z, drinks, condiments, meats, vegetables, breads, soups and salads. With those elements you create a delightful meal for friends and family that they will talk about long after dessert is served. You will get all that here and as the book cover says "The spirit of Tennessee has never tasted better" Enjoy it and pick up a copy for the chef in your home.

This is a about Sabrina. A young woman who falls in love and hides her feelings from the very one who could give her the love she so desperately wants.

I read the first third of the book in one sitting. I was drawn in by Ms. Hunter’s original plot with its many subtle twist and turns. She built the plot up layer by layer with the usual premise of a woman falling in love with a man named Tucker whom she met on line. Nothing different about that, however Ms. Hunter introduces her first twist in the introduction when Tucker approaches Sabrina with an offer. Please help me find the woman I have fallen in love with on line. It doesn’t take long before Sabrina realizes Tucker is looking for her. Sabrina however doesn’t want to be found and does everything she can to stay hidden even as she falls deeper in love.

There were points in the book I wished Ms. Hunter had flushed out a little more, such as Sabrina’s insecurities about her appearance. Also I would have appreciated more details on the background of Sabrina's family and her landlady, mystery writer Renny. Those things would have added more definition and substance to the story and made it more believable. These characters have a profound impact on Sabrina’s life, but the reader comes away knowing little about them. That said I would have no problems reading another book by this storyteller. Plain Promise is a story of a young Amish widow named Sadie who is trying to rebuild her life after the sudden death of her husband. She has a suitor she has yet to meet face to face. They court each other through letters and Sadie hopes to marry him one day. She spends her days working her small farm and running her shop hoping for the day they will wed. Never seeing how the best laid plans can go astray.

Normally I am not a big fan of romance but I couldn’t resist the tender way Ms. Wiseman unfolded this story. It drew me in and kept me cheering for a happy ending for Sadie.

The author took her time and didn’t take the straight road to romance. I must admit I felt the sting and disappointment of her lead character Sadie when all her hopes for the future seemed to be dashed yet again. Sadie's strong commitment to her faith kept her grounded as she cried out to know the will of God.

Beth Wiseman made the Amish community and their simple life a joy to behold. It is a reminder that God should be the center of our lives.

The book is descriptive, imaginative and at times humorous. I enjoyed the time I spent in Lancaster County and look forward to reading other books by this gifted author.

On the side, the blog’s creator placed a little shelf that held books she had read. Crazy Love was one of those books. When I moved my curser over the book I got a peek inside. It was this line of the book that stayed in my heart. “ Sometimes I feel like when I make decisions that are remotely biblical, people who call themselves Christians are the first to criticize and say I'm crazy, that I'm taking the Bible too literally, or that I'm not thinking about my family's well-being”

Wow! His words spoke to the heart of where I am. Encouraged to find out more I did some hunting and found the book and a companion website, http://www.crazylovebook.com/. Francis Chan made a short video to correspond with each chapter. After the first video which shows the awesome power of God, my heart shifted. I am not trying to be dramatic, but something changed in me. My prayer life changed and I began to go after God with a new sense of purpose.

It was weeks later when I finally purchased the book. It was well worth it. Francis Chan is a man passionate about God. Not just following some religious prototype of a Pastor but a man who questions his own heart and his own devotion to a God who loves beyond understanding. Chan questions why we have a problem taking the words Jesus said literally. His book addresses how we have moved so far away from lives of true Christianity for risk free lives of comfort and safety.

It you really want to seek the God who created the universe this book will put a flame in your heart. Or you will put it down not willing to give to God what is rightly due to Him. If you have become dry or complacent in your faith, or just want more of God read this wonderful, challenging and correcting book. It was written with the warm relentless love of God.

Analisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05572966946453192369noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478626963456844892.post-18374346904466811532009-08-17T10:51:00.000-07:002009-08-17T11:16:27.768-07:00Let Go: live free of the burdens all women know by Sheila Walsh

Let go is a command. Using scripture, quotes, stories, and personal testimonies. Ms. Walsh‘s book focuses on God’s faithful promise of love and deliverance in any circumstance.

Ms. Walsh is a student of the bible. She used her skills to make scriptures come to life with a fresh perspective. One example was the tale of Hagar, the slave of Sarah, Abraham’s wife found in the old testament. Her take changed my perspective of Hagar. I left the chapter feeling more compassion for the woman I previously considered an interloper.

The wisdom found on the pages of Let Go is timeless. I would recommend Let Go as message of hope. It is an effective tool for those facing life struggles and challenges. Kudos to Ms.Walsh for sharing so that others can Let Go and walk free.
Analisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05572966946453192369noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478626963456844892.post-9664455617923602022009-08-10T10:30:00.001-07:002009-08-10T10:46:20.939-07:00Book Review-Tender Graces by Kathryn Magendie

Tender Graces is the debut novel from author Kathryn Magendie. The book is told from the vantage point of the main character Virginia Kate Carey. Virginia Kate returns home after the death of her mother. She is determined to reconcile her past and be at peace with it. This is no typical family book of grief and loss. It is a realistic look into the dark places of family history.

With the guidance of Grandma Faith, Virginia Kate recalls her childhood and the home in the mountains she shared with her parents and brothers. It is an eye opening account of how Virginia Kate viewed the struggle of her parent’s marriage. How the family deals with unwanted changes that come in like a slow building tornado that threatens to tear into pieces all they have known and loved.

Ms. Magendie guides the reader down this mountain path with humor, eloquence, and darn good storytelling. This first time author can expertly handle a phrase. What could be a mundane task carried out by a character is full meaning. The characters in the story are rich and colorful. Even when they drop by for a short visit you will remember them after you turn the page, and turn the page you will. I smiled and cried as I was drawn into their lives hoping for the best and fearing the worst.

This was a book I dreaded finishing. With only forty pages left I vowed not to read it for one day. It was like denying a PMS sufferer chocolate and I gave up. When I finished this book I was happy and content. I know if you read Tender Graces and dive into the life of Virginia Kate Carey you will be too.

Analisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05572966946453192369noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7478626963456844892.post-1693160780679239522009-08-02T11:53:00.000-07:002009-08-02T12:44:59.610-07:00A new blog.Since I was a kid I have been a reader.
